Curriculum Vitae
The CV I currently use is not relevant to my future career path, and is instead tailored towards the hospitality industry, in which I work part-time alongside my studies. I produced a new CV at the beginning of the year to reflect my latest experience, and have been using it for several months. I recently met with the careers adviser to obtain feedback on how to improve it.
Below are the original copy and the improved version, along with a list of changes made.
- Swap places for education and training sections, bringing education to the top of the page.
- Delete "interests" section as I have sufficient experience not to need to bulk out my CV with this
- Make CV fit on one page (it previously just spilled onto a second page)
- Try to include more examples of how relevant skills were gained in work placements rather than just being descriptive of the job's responsibilities
- Avoid repetition in summary - my education and work experience section already make it clear that I am a student who works part-time in hospitality, this does not need repeating in the summary. Instead, tailor the summary to individual job applications.
Overall, the feedback I received on my CV was positive, and I hope these small changes help to make a better first impression to employers in the future.
