Equine Lecturer Career Requirements
Though I would ideally like to teach at HE level, I think it would be beneficial for me to begin my teaching career at FE level and work my way up. Having observed a number of job advertisements for equine lecturing jobs, both FE and HE, and from experience of speaking with my FE tutors in particular during my time at college, these are the requirements that I have identified for this career path:
Degree in a related subject
For HE lecturing, a Masters in a related subject is highly desirable
For senior positions, having or working towards a PhD almost essential
A teaching qualification, or the willingness to complete a teaching qualification alongside the job within two years
Previous teaching/lecturing experience
For senior positions, experience in management and leadership of a team is essential
Because I do not expect to enter the teaching profession at HE level, I am focusing on the requirements for an FE lecturer in the immediate. According to the National Career’s Service (NCS), this profession requires:
Minimum of a level 3 qualification in teaching, i.e. Level 3 Award in Education and Training
Ideally, a PGCE in addition to this
A degree in a related field
GCSEs at A* to C in English and Maths
DBS check
In addition to these, there are a number of required skills:
The ability to motivate and engage students of all ages and abilities
The ability to express yourself clearly in speech and writing
Creativity to design activities and materials
Organisational and planning skills
The NCS also provides details of salary, as follows:
Starter: £24,000
Experienced: £36,000 to £40,000
Highly Experienced: £40,000 to £80,000 (leadership and management)
Part-time hourly rates vary between £15 and £35 an hour.
Though these figures are only a guide, I have found them to be accurate when compared with the salaries observed in the job advertisements I have found.
Below are examples of job advertisements I have been able to find:
